A Severe Case of Dental Attrition Might Need Treatment with a Dental Crown

The condition known as dental attrition is often caused by minor deviations in the alignment of your teeth. As this starts to happen one tooth can rub excessively on another which gradually starts to compromise the tooth enamel.

As time passes, a new cavity might develop in the compromised tooth enamel, or the reduced dental structure could lead to a severe dental fracture.

If it’s caught early Dr. Feriel El Ghaoui might be able to treat a minor case of dental attrition with a standard dental filling. However, if the compromised area of tooth enamel is large she might recommend fully replacing the tooth’s enamel layer with a dental crown.

This calls for Dr. Feriel El Ghaoui to use a dental drill to remove the remaining tooth enamel. This will leave behind a small pillar of dentin called an abutment.

A detailed impression will be made of this abutment and any related teeth in your bite pattern. It will be sent to a dental lab where dental technicians will form your dental crown from either gold, porcelain, or another metallic alloy.

You will need to return to Dr. Feriel El Ghaoui’s dental office when your dental crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as Dr. Feriel El Ghaoui simply needs to cement the dental work in place with a strong dental adhesive.
